I think the problem may lie in the fact that society rewards certain attributes (mostly attributed to the male gender of the spectrum) and punishes others by default without considering the people themselves. So you have people loving Toph or Azula versus somebody hating on Katara for being motherly or princess Yue for her own status without taking into account who they are and what makes them great.
It’s true! Avafandom has a lot of mind-implodingly infuriating facets, but the thing that always gets me going without fail is the implication that female characters with more stereotypically feminine traits are weaker because of them. Feminism and gender equality, ur doin it rong.
