Underrated Kataang Moments → The Avatar State
This episode was the first instance in which “love” is used to describe Kataang, even though Katara said it in a somewhat indirect way, it’s obvious that she’s referring to herself when she says how difficult it is for her to see him in the Avatar State. This moment also shows that for Katara, it’s not just about ending the war, something she’s dreamed of since she was very young. She now places Aang’s well-being over a swift end to the war because she has grown to care about him so much. This episode is also an interesting parallel to The Southern Raiders, as Katara is not afraid to voice her disapproval of Aang’s decision but lets him do it anyways. However, she refuses to take part in it because she can’t see him in pain like that. And finally, when Aang has triggered the Avatar State, the look on Katara’s face says it all. Katara has just almost died! She totally thought she was going to die and when she finally resurfaces, the first thing on her mind isn’t concern for herself but for Aang.
Look at his expression, how he’s looking at her when she’s not even watching. That’s not how someone looks at another when they just have a crush. He adores her.
