1) Everyone’s faves fuck up. That does not make YOU a bad person for stanning them. This is especially true in real-person fandom where we can’t blame writers, producers, and censors.
2) If you aggressively defend their fuck-ups to the people those fuck-ups hurt, YOU are doing something wrong and YOU are now part of the problem. Don’t do this. Don’t be this person.
Isayama has confirmed that… we’re not allowed to confirm Hange’s gender. He has instructed us to avoid gendered pronouns when referring to Hange, or at least to use he AND she with equal frequency.
THIS IS AWESOME.
Buuuuut casual reminder to tumblrites: This still doesn’t mean that Hange is canonically non-binary. All it means is that her canon gender is uncomfirmed. Which means that she COULD very well be non-binary, but she could also be male or female. Every gender is valid and everyone wins!
Isayama’s editor tweeted in November that when she asked Isayama about this he said "either gender is fine," so before anybody freaks out about “misgendering” Hange please remember that the author himself is okay with any gender y’all want to assign the character, including ye olde binary genders (which, in fact, the use of the word どっち/”either” in that tweet implies is exactly the box that Isayama and/or his editor is still thinking in, something which I would just like to point out before anybody goes giving Isayama too much credit here).
What’s new is that apparently now Isayama wishes for the English translation to leave Hange’s gender open to interpretation, which was not exactly the case before, but hey if Isayama changed his mind about this then that is definitely cool and regardless of the reason (even if the reason was “hey if my Japanese fans want male Hange for the hawt yaois then why the hell not” which I strongly, STRONGLY suspect was at least part of the motivation here) it’s still pretty awesome.
'every gender is valid and everyone wins!'
'she' 'her' 'done 4 the yaoiz'
I want you to read over your first para and consider, ‘why am I so invested in ‘reminding’ NB people that they haven’t won this one just like they’ve never won anything? why do I care so much about cis woman hanji that I will go against canon and the feelings of an absolutely non-represented group and not refer to hanji with neutral or alternating pronouns but just female ones like I always have? why did I hear ‘hanji has no confirmed gender’ and care only about defending why it’s still ok to ‘interpret’ them as a cis woman rather than agender or bigender for entirely no reason?’
and then when you answer yourself w/ ‘because I am an embarrassing transphobe that shouldn’t be taken seriously’ we can all move on and the fandom can stop being the hive of horseshit that it is right now
the fucking author said ‘avoid using gendered language for this character’ what else the fuck do you need. a missive from obama? a statement from the pope? queen elizabeth ii sending you a postcard? the un meeting and issuing a declaration? a disembodied finger of god appearing in your room and writing ‘don’t do that’ in flaming letters on your wall?
spam this in the ereri tag
- Japan’s legal age of consent is 13
- if you base pedophilia’s definition on western culture that is fine it is problematic for u blacklist the tag move da fuck one because u cant stop 90% the fanart coming from japan anyways
this is why i think fandoms are gross. really really gross.
the national age of consent is 13 in japan, yeah. but prefecture laws generally take precedent in japanese matters, and the different prefectures tend to have age of consent laws way above 13, all the way up to 18 (even higher than in the us, at 16.) so. japan’s national age of consent is meaningless here.
and the age of adulthood in japan is generally 20, for the record (that’s when you can vote) and you’re legal to drive at 18 (again, higher than the usa.) consent ages or not, i think that alone speaks volumes about that particular issue.
can we please not try to coopt other countries/cultures laws and internal issues to validate ships? you don’t need to “validate” your ships, guys.
I also feel the need to point out that the age of consent is for sex and sexual acts between two teenagers and such. Japan also has the “Child Welfare Act” and article 34 bullet point six prevents sexual acts with a minor and makes it prosecutable by law. Please do no pick and choose real Japanese laws to apply to a fictional world to validate your ship, thank you. You’re more than welcome to enjoy your ship and find reasons within canon to support your ship, but I find posts like this only serve in perpetuating stereotypes of Japan as a perverted nation, full of love-hotels, realistic sex-dolls and the like which is a real disservice to Japan and its people.
my favorite thing is how the marco fans who won’t move on projected that feeling onto jean kirschtein. canon jean grieves his friend but ultimately accepts he’s dead and doesn’t revolve his entire life around that loss. esp when you take out that garbage anime filler from one of the single worst eps in the whole adaptation
but fanon jean is unhealthily obsessed with marco. his whole existence revolves around marco. he’s just another jealous possessive petty allo pain in the ass who literally stops marco from having other friends and makes up bullshit theories for why he could be still alive, despite u kno, having been bitten in two and all
that one female character that a lot of people hate and when questioned they all say “we would hate them if they were a guy too!!”
buT YOU KNOW
YOU KNOW THAT IS A PACK OF LIES
Well mate, s’all very simple see. You just take a hammer and start beating the shit out of ‘em so every nook n cranny is as straight as a flat iron. This is a real special hammer made out of crappy ass fanfic, headcanons, other bullshit n what have you.
there are some rly gr8 fanfictions
there are some fanfictions that are ok
there are some rly bad fanfictions
and then there are those ones that just makes you
plot twist: two male characters are platonic friends and the fandom appreciates them as such
further plot twist: two characters of opposite gender are platonic friends and the fandom appreciates them as such
bigger plot twist: two female characters are platonic friends and aren’t hyper sexualized together by the male half of the fandom and thus, by the merchandizing team
even bigger plot twist: two male characters aren’t automatically assumed straight until proven otherwise
biggest plot twist: when a fandom with no/few canonically queer characters ships two close characters of the same gender in order to feel a little more normal, less ignored by media in general and/or just connected to the characters they love, straight people have the decency and understanding not to fucking whine about it
au where the snk fandom doesn’t reduce female characters down to being perfect moeblob princesses with no thoughts, feelings, or desires of their own who are only valuable when they’re being used for male consumption
ok but serious post time like idc what you ship or if you ship but can u stop denying that ymir’s feelings for christa are highly romantic because like ?????????
can we not ignore how much she concerns herself w/ christa and dismiss it as “lol she’s just young and confused she doesn’t actually love her” bc at this point in the series uM
If anyone thinks that ymir and christa are not 10000000000000% gay for each other then I am equally as certain that we are literally not reading the same series.
isnt it interesting how willing ppl are to ship het ships or even dudeslash ships and throw it around that the ppl involved are in ~*~true love~*~ w e/o even if the ship is fanon but when you start saying two women are canonically into each other they start denying it so hard it isnt funny
isnt it interesting
seriously i’m so fucking over people acting like ~*~bromances~*~ are these sacred pure untouchable relationships that absolutely must remain platonic or else you’re doing the characters a disservice of some sort by defiling their precious platonic relationship with your gross gayness.
what exactly is so threatening about interpreting a romantic relationship from a male friendship? people do it ALL THE FUCKING TIME with friendships between men and women but you dont see HALF as many people whining about how we’re ~ruining their platonic relationship with our shipping.
because, you know, hetero relationships are the default and its practically fucking EXPECTED that we interpret a romantic relationship from it even if the canon has a completely platonic relationship between them. where are all the fuckers insisting that we let those relationships stay ~pure and platonic~? fandom’s latent homophobia is transparent and annoying.
like i honestly don’t give a shit if you prefer characters in a platonic relationship seriously do whatever the fuck you want but you’re not superior for not shipping them romantically, fuck off.
