I found something really messed up on facebook…https://www.facebook.com/HeteroAwarenessMonth
This shit is real, and it is not a joke. It almost looks like a sick sick joke but it is not. This is the least offensive photo, much of the pages is disgustingly homophobic and hate mongering.
I reported them to Facebook already, will you do the same? Just reblog and spread. C’mon Tumblr. We can do this.
WE ARE ALREADY
AWARE OF YOU
YOU ARE EVERYWHERE
WE SEE YOU LITERALLY EVERY DAY
EVEN IF I WERE TO GO TO SOME REALLY GAY RETREAT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, ANYONE FLIPPING ON A RADIO OR TELEVISION WOULD IMMEDIATELY EXPOSE EVERYONE IN RANGE TO HETEROSEXUALITY
I JUST CAN’T GET FAR ENOUGH OVER THE FACT THAT THEY CHOSE THE WORD “AWARENESS” TO TURN OFF CAPSLOCK
I AM STUCK LIKE THIS FOREVER
CHUNKILY CAPSLOCKING AT THE CONCEPT OF ANYONE IN THE WESTERN WORLD AND AT LEAST A LARGE MAJORITY OF EVERYWHERE ELSE NOT BEING AWARE OF HETEROSEXUALITY
SORRY ‘BOUT YOUR DASH
So I have gotten fussed at because I apparently make “straight characters” gay and ship them…..but people never get upset when people take lesbian/gay characters and ship them with the opposite sex.
which is funny because there are already plenty of hetero characters in the media but so few queer ones,
so its actually much more detrimental to make queer characters het than it is to make het characters queer.
and by funny i mean i want to punch myself in the face.
and goes,”Hailey stop trying to find the gay in everything, stop, not everybody is gay, Lin is not gay, Korra is not gay, and Asami is not gay. They are straight. You think everybody is gay”. I was just shocked into silence and almost tears. I didn’t know what to say. Just curious what you think I should have said to her, or in the future if this is brought up what should I say?
You should take a page from Kyoshi’s book and bathe in her blood
no don’t that’s illegal I’m joking
Um all right serious answer
First off, did you know that it’s possible to be attracted to more than one gender. It’s true! You can read about it on the internets! Just because we’ve only seen them in canonical relationships with men doesn’t make them heterosexual, she just assumes it does because heterosexuality is the assumed default. Heterosexism how does it work.
Second, NOT ENOUGH SHIT IS GAY. Queer people get shit representation. If people want to write fanon stuff to make up for it, that’s legit and it’s not hurting anyone.
Also, depending on how much you want to fight this person, ask her why she’s so defensive and opposed to them being something other than straight? Spoiler alert: it’s heterosexism, possibly internalized. Otherwise, characters being gay/bi/pan/queer wouldn’t phase her because it wouldn’t be a detrimental thing. Her precious heterosexuality is not threatened by you writing, drawing, talking, or thinking about Korra making out with Asami’s face, and these characters are not lesser if they want to make out with each others faces.
And if all else fails tell this person to go fuck herself because she sounds like a bit of an asshole. Reiterate the sentiment to anyone else who gets on your back about shipping queer ships.
And, of course, bathe in their blood if they refuse to see reason.
I’m going to need people to stop pulling scenes out of movies in which two straight male characters make eye contact for two seconds or exhibit any display of genuine affection and using that to say that they’re ‘obviously gay for each other’.
Say it with me, people.
Displays of affection between men do not make men gay.
Displays of affection between men do not make men gay.
Displays of affection between men do not make men gay.
Being gay makes men gay. Relating genuine affection between men to homosexuality is the patriarchy shitting out of your mouth.
Urgh. I’m having problems articulating why this bugs me so much.
While I think that in this case the OP is meaning that the displays of affection between men is seen as feminine and thus gay [as a slur], it bugs me because I like to slash stuff. I like to slash stuff because I am under represented within popular media [although represented more so than gay men] and taking two characters with limited interaction and pairing them together and drawin’ silly things with the two of them makes me happy.
It’s a way for me, personally, to counteract the limited character portrayals within popular media. I like the subtext! I wish it were actual text but for now these small glances and headcanon’s have to do and if two dudes are affectionate and I could potentially see them ending up together in my head then fuckin’ awesome.
First I think it is worth noting that the OP is himself gay, unless I’m getting my wires crossed. Apologies if I am.
So I kind of agree with both the OP and the above commentary at the same time. On one hand, I do rather like slash relationships in fiction and I often ship pairings that are not canon and either completely invented or drawn from subtext. Also, I am concerned that some people reblogging this will be doing so because “it’s possible for men to be friends stop making them gay!!!!!” which is not a valid criticism of the slash community (although there are many valid criticisms, I should note) please sit down.
ON THE OTHER HAND, what the OP is outlining is my essential issue with a lot of the narratives I see people slashing. The basic formula seems to be “two cis white guys with lots of heavy subtext” and that’s also kind of. Well, if the subtext had follow-up in canon, it might be a different story, but to me a lot of it strikes me as.. baiting people who the authors of these narratives know will go for the subtext while simultaneously screaming “NO HOMO” because god forbid we have actual queer relationships in popular culture.
THE BOTTOM LINE IS, I think that liking slash relationships in fanon is perfectly well and good and a good way to cope with inadequate representation, but it should NOT be conflated with ACTUAL adequate representation, and that is something a lot of people are guilty of. They tend to act like strategic writing in popular narratives is the same thing as actual queer representation, and that is not the goddamn case.
I will never be sorry when I get frustrated when another character is put forth/confirmed as straight when they could easily have been made queer. If that frustration is off-putting to you that is your problem and you need to deal with it. It is not like you don’t get exposed to multitudes of characters and relationships that are similar to you/yours at EVERY POINT OF YOUR LIFE. You got to see relationships and people that looked like you when you were young in media that was meant for you.
I didn’t realize I was queer until I was 15 and huge reason why I realized it then was because I got see stuff like Haruka and Michiru and Willow and Tara and have everything click that yes, my liking girls and not feeling attraction to boys was a thing that did exist in people outside of me. It isn’t hard for me to hazard that a lot of the confusion that I felt leading up to that could have been saved had I seen representations of queer people in stuff like Disney and Don Bluth films that I watched when I grew up. So just think about that.
If it really bothers you that people read characters (particularly young characters) as queer but not when people read characters as straight you should re-evaluate your thoughts and ask yourself just why that bothers you, and why you have to try and make queer people feel guilty for fully valid frustration with extent that heteronormativity is pushed in everything everywhere along with the complete dearth of representation of queer people in everything.
That is something you should feel uncomfortable about.
i don’t get why people are really against same sex couples in television, particularly cartoons aimed at kids
people treat the mere idea of it as perverse and wrong???? and not for children???? ??? ??
wow uhm what
do you know how utterly ridiculous that is
it is very very utterly ridiculous it’s about as ridiculous as an elephant in a clown outfit tap dancing with a banana while on a tightrope THAT’S HOW RIDICULOUS IT IS
THE LEVELS OF RIDICULOUS ARE OVER THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT
and you know how people say that well
“the parents would throw a fit!!!!!! just wait ok people will EVENTUALLY become accepting”
wow ok but
here’s the thing
if you keep using that excuse???? then chances are nothing will change
bolded mine yes good
So, when I first heard about Korra, I was SUPER excited, and even planned to cosplay the girl.
But, as time has gone on, my excitement has dwindled,…
omg r u srs
look dude you can like or dislike korra as much as you damn well please but uh
first off, ~*~Mary Sue~*~ is a really arbitrary term used to vindicate female characters for basically anything any fandom in question feels like vindicating them for, so congrats on using a very flexible and inherently misogynistic term to describe a character i guess????? WOW YOU CALLED A FEMALE CHARACTER A MARY SUE YOU’RE SO UNIQUE no you’re literally like everyone else in fandom. u r not a speshul snowflake.
god, has every female character in avatar been called a mary sue at some point or another? i think they have! because they all have kickass fighting or bending abilities! and if they don’t, THEN the fandom vindicates them for being feminine! LADIES CAN’T WIN!!!!!!!!!!!
look god korra can bend three elements when she’s a kid and she’s brash. good for her i guess but that hardly a mary sue makes. she’s hardly the best bender we’ve seen. AANG was a better bender than her. he was a fully realized avatar at the age of twelve. it took her 10+ years to master three elements and if trailers are any indication she’s gonna struggle with air like no one’s fucking business.
and like i said, she appears to be brash and impulsive. bryke have called her hotheaded. THOSE ARE…….HARDLY THE MAKINGS OF A PERFECT CHARACTER WITH NO FLAWS? they are probably going to get her in trouble at some point???????????
but i guess since she displays traits that fandom would jizz themselves over if she was a dude, that makes her a ~*~mary sue~*~. COOL STORY BRO tell it @ parties.
is it weird for me to be excited for Korra to be kind of a jerk? or rather, to be obstinate, moody, and the total fame-and-bravado type? i know it’s early to tell but she seems overall very brash and do-first-ask-questions-later. like i just realized how many male heroes i’ve seen with all those traits, especially male leads (shounen heroes, etc.) but…never really that many female leads? like usually minor female characters who are meant to be knocked down a peg for their brashness (as opposed to main male characters who are either rewarded for it or learn to overcome it in a sympathetic manner) but i am super excited for a female lead who is just allowed to be…kind of a dick!
like Katara and Toph were good examples of the ATLA team’s track record of having girls who were flawed and not always nice, but weren’t constantly punished for it. Toph was kind of a jerk! Katara was kind of passive aggressive and extremely vindictive. But at the end of the day they were allowed to be those things, and it never had to end in some great knockdown, “haha silly ladies you should be nicer/more helpful/quieter” kind of thing.
i am just really, really happy about this! it is cool to have flawed girl characters without having to have giant knock-downs or excuses. it’s very organic, and it’s good writing.
1) There are endless, ENDLESS things that could go wrong with a CBS drama about Sherlock Holmes with Lucy Liu as Rule 63 Dr. Watson. From all the things that usually plague female characters and, especially, WoC characters in western entertainment to the show just being plain shitty.
2) None of these things is how now there won’t be pandering queer subtext. Literally none of them. Not a single one of them.
3) And I, personally, refuse to worry about any of these things until we know more than the fact that Joan Watson exists and is played by Lucy Liu.
4) Holmes and Watson should, indeed, very probably be the same gender and as such I am completely open to complaints about the egregious casting mistake that has been made here, and I am totally down with all campaigns to recast Holmes as Indira Varma or someone else but mostly Indira Varma.
5) Casting a WoC as Watson is not an “attempt” to be more progressive than all the White Dude/White Dude Holmes adaptations brimming with never, ever, ever, ever to be fulfilled queer subtext. It just straight up is more progressive.
6) The show not starring two white dudes does not actually preclude it from having queer subtext or, GASP, actual queer content. Contrary to what fandom would have you believe, queerness does, in fact, still exist even when it is not solely concerning two white dudes.
7) There is a chance that homophobia motivated the decision to make Dr. Watson a woman so that the show could easily avoid having to deal with homoerotic subtext common to Sherlock and other narratives primarily focused on male homosocial relationships. However, given the widespread willingness to shamelessly tease queerness with regard to such relationships, the success this tactic has met with in terms of drawing and establishing dedicated audiences, and the fact that major networks don’t actually, here in reality, go out of their way to make iconic dude characters into ladies (and non-white ladies at that) so as to up the lady to dude ratio in their shows, I sincerely doubt it.
8) Even if said decision was made for homophobic reasons the end result is still markedly less homophobic than the show/creators/network constantly pandering and then screaming BUT NO HOMO.
9) Because no one involved in this is even fucking PRETENDING that Watson and Holmes would have actually been gay had Bland White Dude X been cast as Watson, they did not actually remove a queer couple and replace it with a straight one.
10) So stop concerntrolling. And also shut up.
"Contrary to what fandom would have you believe, queerness does, in fact, still exist even when it is not solely concerning two white dudes."
Rawles I am literally going to embroider this quote, frame it, and hang it on my wall.
i’m sick of queer subtext
i want queer text
basically if youre a cis person trying to police how trans interpretations of characters NEED TO BE or else theyre NOT REALLY TRANS, THEY HAVE TO AGONIZE OVER THEIR INFERIOR LOT IN LIFE AND PRESENT AND ACT A CERTAIN WAY youre not really doing trans people as much of a favor as you think and should probably stop
